Pizza delivery was a royal affair
Long before Grabfood and foodpanda were part and parcel of our lives, the idea of pizza delivery first began on foot. The Queen of Italy kick-started the idea of pizza deliveries, inspiring the ingenious idea of bringing food to people wherever they are. Thanks to her, we can now enjoy pizzas from just a button away!
Pizzas were food for the poor

Pizzas first made its debut in Naples as a staple for the working class. The Neapolitans had none of the pineapples-on-pizzas debate like we did. Unlike the pizzas we eat today, their version was simply flatbreads topped with tomatoes. It became a convenient option since it was cheap, filling, and easy to whip up.
In 1889, Queen Margherita’s arrival revolutionised the pizza scene. Tired of the usual feasts, she decided to switch it up and requested food for the masses.
The first pizza delivery – Margherita Pizza

An Italian pizza chef by the name of Raffaele Esposito took on the all-important task. He dished out 3 different pizzas with his wife’s help, including one peppered with the colours of Italy’s flag – green basil, white mozzarella, and red tomatoes.
Since it was practically unheard of for royalty to dine-in in a local pizzeria, Esposito sent the pizzas over himself. Not only was this the first pizza delivery ever recorded in history, but also the birth of the Margherita Pizza.
